According to the New Economics Foundation, ‘‘wellbeing can be understood as how people feel and how they function, both on a personal and a social level, and how they evaluate their lives as a whole.”
Over the last 18 months, the wellbeing, both mental and physical, of many of our fellow human beings has taken a hit like never before, affecting how they feel, how they function and leading many to question where they are in their lives. This has had a direct negative impact on their wellbeing.
There has been behavioural change forced upon us, enforced incarceration in our homes and a constant drip feed of bad news in the media and on our TV screens. Not to mention the millions of people that have been directly or indirectly affected by the loss of a loved one or friend. For many, the scars from this period of time may not be visible but will run deep and will remain there for decades to come.
So, right now, we think it’s entirely reasonable to say that it’s never been more important to consider the impact of our decisions and behaviours on our fellow human beings.
Founded 20 years ago on the belief that there was a ‘better way’ to conduct business in the mobility industry, here at Yorkshire & Humber Relocation, we are proud to say that we have stuck firmly to our ‘assignee at the centre of everything’ policy. It has won us many clients and friends over the years. No doubt, we have lost some too, who felt that we couldn’t or wouldn’t align with some of their sharper commercial decisions. Whilst difficult to lose any client, we know over the longer term, it’s probably been for the best. We’re proud that we share the same values with our clients, when it comes to the treatment and wellbeing of their employees and our mutual commitment to an agreed approach to mobility strategy and policy that has employee wellbeing at its core.
The last 18 months has affected different companies in many different ways and for many, it has further polarised their approach to employee wellbeing. Those that previously held their employees’ wellbeing in high regard have typically embraced the whole notion to an even deeper level. They have decided, commercial considerations included, that this is a responsibility that they will not ignore and that to do so, would be likely to have a negative impact on their business. On the flip side of the coin, there are clearly some companies who, for their own reasons, choose to take a different approach when it comes to the wellbeing of their employees and treat them more as commodities.
This purpose of this article is only to shine a light on the importance of acknowledging and protecting the wellbeing of all employees that are wanting or having to move from one location to another in order to undertake their work. For those companies that do not adopt this approach, that is entirely their right and business to do so.
Over the last 20 years, we’ve seen the good, the bad and the ugly of relocation practices amongst employers and mobility companies alike. Given the turmoil of the last year and a half, here at Yorkshire & Humber Relocation, we believe it’s more important than ever that companies do their very best to recognise the benefits of enabling and maintaining employee wellbeing throughout their organisations and in particular when it comes to the mobility of their staff. Choosing the right relocation company to deliver these services has never been more important and it is crucial that employers choose a company that aligns with their approach to employee wellbeing.
The process and activities of relocating an employee are by their very nature, transactional, but so often, the experience that an assignee goes through, getting from A to B and each step along the way, is an emotional journey which can so easily be under appreciated, misunderstood & under prioritised.
At Yorkshire & Humber Relocation, we treat every individual assignee and their family as a unique case, requiring their own special care and attention. All assignee cases are overseen by a member of our senior team at all times and we limit our case numbers to ensure we have the time to deliver the best service possible to each and every assignee. Our assignees are not commodities, but human beings and are treated as such. Our ‘early engagement’ needs assessment includes questions to get a real feel for how an assignee is feeling. This information is then carried forward into the first discovery call with the assignee. This provides the solid foundations on which we can build and run their personalised programme.
We ensure that the correct and appropriate support is offered and then delivered throughout the entire life cycle of the assignees move, always taking into account the physical transactions of the move as well as all the emotional aspects involved. Our emphasis is always to look after our assignees and their families with a focus on their happiness and welfare underpinning all that we do. In doing so, we believe that we help support and nurture content and healthy employees who will feel more secure and engaged in their roles and consequently be more productive for their companies.
By consistently pursuing our ‘assignee at the centre of everything’ policy, our ultimate goal is to ensure that all our assignees settle well, every time!
